Seven Arrows Strong

School News

  • February 4, 2025

    Dear Seven Arrows Community,

As you know, our Board of Trustees and administrators have been working tirelessly to find the optimal space for Seven Arrows as we move forward. Our focus has been on securing a location that allows us to thrive not just in the short term, but also in the long-term (approx. 3 years), while we determine our future in the Palisades.

Today, we are absolutely thrilled to share our plan—one that provides a clear and strategic approach for the short-term, long-term, and even the longer-term future of Seven Arrows.

We deeply appreciate your patience, support, and commitment throughout these transitions. Your trust has meant so much to us. We have been working diligently to find a space where our students and teachers can continue learning, growing, and thriving for years to come.

INTRODUCING THE FUTURE HOME OF SEVEN ARROWS

    2800 28th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90405

We are thrilled to share that our new space is located on 28th Street at Ocean Park in Santa Monica! We are actively working on the Phase 1 build-out and beautification of the space, with the goal of moving in on April 7, immediately after Spring Break.

This new location is truly spectacular, offering ample indoor and outdoor space, serenity, and security. By the time we move in, we have no doubt that it will feel magically Seven Arrows. The best part? There is enough space for our entire school, including dedicated areas for art, music, STEAM, Spanish, breakout spaces, a library, mindfulness space, athletics and more!

Additionally, we will have access to Clover Park, a large, beautiful open space that will serve as an extension of our students’ learning environment, allowing for outdoor exploration, play, and enrichment.

    A Bittersweet Moment
While we are excited about this new chapter, we also acknowledge the deep sense of loss that comes with losing our longtime campus and neighborhood, a place filled with cherished memories. We know how much that space meant—not just as a place of learning but as the heart of our community. Yet, even in change, we find silver linings and new opportunities.

WHAT'S AMAZING ABOUT OUR NEW LOCATION:

    • A prime Westside location in Santa Monica, with Clover Park as our backyard and additional private outdoor space accessible only through our campus.

    • Spacious first-floor layout with ample square footage for the entire school.

    • Beautiful wall to wall windows in every classroom.

    • A long-term home where we can comfortably stay for the foreseeable future.

    • Potential for expansion should we need more space in the future.

    • Ample parking for the community.

While, we wish we could move in immediately, we are extremely pleased with our current situation at the Boys & Girls Clubs, which gives us the flexibility to complete our first phase of construction and beautification.

We are actively working on creating renderings of our new space and look forward to sharing these, along with additional photos, in the near future.

In the meantime, we invite you to join us for a community Zoom meeting next Tuesday, 2/11 at 6:30 PM. During this session, we will provide updates on the new space and answer any questions you may have. Zoom details will be included in this week’s Arrow Dynamics. We hope to see you there.

Though this transition was unexpected, we will embrace it with the resilience, creativity, and heart that define Seven Arrows. As we step into this new chapter, we do so together—with deep gratitude for the past and excitement for the future.

We know that the uncertainty has been challenging for all of us, and we truly appreciate your patience and trust throughout this process. Our hope is that this plan provides clarity and allows you to move forward with confidence. If there is anything we can do to further support you during this time, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

    In Partnership,

    Margarita Pagliai

    Dear Families,

Today was our first day at both the Santa Monica and Venice Boys & Girls Clubs, and it was a resounding success! We now have dedicated classrooms for every grade, additional spaces for small group instruction, two gyms for PE and playtime, and community gathering spaces for lunch and more.

In addition, we are in the process of rebuilding our library of books and curriculum, ensuring we can continue with our academic plans as we originally intended before the fires. We cannot our teachers and staff, enough for their flexibility over the past few weeks. They have faced challenge after challenge with grace and positivity, always putting on a brave face for the children.  Thank you for moving mountains to support our students!

We are also deeply grateful to you, our families, for your patience and flexibility as we determine our next steps. We understand that everyone is eager to know the plan, and we share in that excitement. While we don’t have an update today, we are hopeful to be able to share more as soon as tomorrow. Rest assured, once everything is in place, you’ll be the first to know!
We also wanted to remind everyone that our first Early Dismissal Day will be tomorrow.

    • Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club (TK–2nd): 1:45–2:00 PM

    • Venice Boys & Girls Club (3rd–6th): 1:30–1:45 PM

    VALENTINE'S DAY THIS YEAR

This year, we’ve decided not to have students create individual Valentine’s Day cards to exchange. We understand that families have a lot going on right now, and we don’t want to add anything else to your to-do list.

Instead, during the in-class Valentine’s Day parties, each student will either craft or receive an item that can be signed by all their classmates (essentially, they’ll receive one big Valentine from everyone in the class).

More details about each class's celebration will be shared by your Room Parents soon.

Thank you to everyone who joined us yesterday for our Community Healing event. We are especially grateful to Al and Amara Hastingsfor generously opening their home to host this meaningful gathering. Their warmth and hospitality made the event even more special.

Those who joined had the opportunity to come together with licensed therapist and mindfulness expert, Brian Shiers, to process and share our feelings as we begin the journey of rebuilding our lives after the fires. It was a powerful experience, reflecting on the challenges we've faced and the unique paths we each are walking.

While the road ahead is difficult, we are continually inspired by the strength and love within our Seven Arrows community.

Emily Costas, one of our beloved Fifth Grade teachers, shared a poem she wrote that brought many of us to tears. Her words beautifully capture how much we care for your children and for all of you. Thank you Emily. Here’s what she shared:

Parents are superheroes on any normal day.
They keep their kids safe and wipe their tears away.

When something big and scary happens, their kids need them most. This was true on January 7th, as a fire ripped its way from the canyon to the coast.

In the scariest of times, as they held their little ones near,
I can only imagine how hard it was to be strong and brave while in so much fear.

These super parents have since been put to nearly every test,
From answering hard questions to finding a home, all while trying to show up for their kids best.

There must still be moments of absolute pain all around,
While coping with all that was lost, including the feeling of being safe and sound.

Super parents are human too, and need moments to grieve and to rest.
Please know that here at our school, your kids are in the care of the best.

I’ve watched our Seven Arrows family rise up, even stronger than before.
We have so much love for your families, that we all cherish and adore.

Your little ones have so much of your strength and are so incredibly resilient.
In this time and always, their love is so big, and their inner lights so brilliant.

Together we uphold our connection, and our strong, beautiful community.
In any place we’re together, there is so much joy, love, and the utmost unity.

What you have endured is unfathomable, and I have so much respect and admiration
For all that you have navigated and continue to without cessation.

Please know you are supported. You’re in our thoughts and hearts.
Your kids are constantly on our minds, long after each student departs.

We are here for you through this time, and we all love you.
Here’s to the super parents, and their incredible children too.

    KUYAM LOGISTICS THIS FRIDAY

Kuyam will be happening this Friday! The theme is PERSEVERANCE. We’ll be holding Kuyam at the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club again, this time with improved sound equipment.

Drop-off for ALL students will be at the Santa Monica location (not Venice) at 8:15 AM.

After Kuyam, students in Grades 3-6 will take a bus to the Venice location, where they will spend the rest of the day. Parents do not need to drive students to the Venice location.

We can’t wait to sing together with pride!

  • January 31, 2025

    Dear Families,

It was such a joy to gather with many of you this morning at Kuyam. The reunions, hugs, and shared stories truly warmed our hearts.

We had hoped to share details about the new space today, and we are so close—we can almost taste it! Just a few more days to finalize everything, and we’ll be ready to announce the full details early next week.

    IMPORTANT DETAILS:

You may have noticed some new faces around the Boys & Girls Club today. We’re excited to introduce Lisa Yukelson and Martha Champlin, who have joined us as floating substitutes during this transition. They are here to support our teachers and provide additional classroom help as our faculty recover from the fires, adjust to our new environment, and manage the challenges of lost homes and more.

Lisa has worked with us for the last three years, largely as a tutor for 1st - 5th grade students. Martha is helping us for the first time this year, but we have known her for many years through her work in elementary education.

    LISA YUKELSON

Lisa Yukelson is an experienced educator with over 30 years of teaching and tutoring students from kindergarten through 12th grade. She has taught first and second grade in the classroom, homeschooled student-athletes and families with a passion for travel, and provided private tutoring across a wide range of subjects. Lisa specializes in test preparation for the ISEE and HSPT and is trained in the Orton-Gillingham and Lindamood-Bell reading programs, allowing her to support students with diverse learning needs. Her extensive experience and individualized approach help students build confidence and achieve academic success.

    MARTHA CHAMPLIN
With over 20 years of experience in education, Martha has worn many hats—both as a teacher and an administrator. Most recently, she served as the Director of the Elementary School at New Roads where she enjoyed serving the students, staff, and community over the last eight years. Originally from Chicago, Martha has lived on the westside of Los Angeles for 20 years. She is a mother of three grown children and enjoys nothing more than teaching and inspiring students to bring out their confidence and continued joy for learning.

    Dear Families,

Happy Wednesday! Today was a spectacular day for our students, faculty, and staff as we celebrated the Lunar New Year together. Everyone enjoyed a variety of handmade dumplings, rice, noodles, and vegetable dishes. We are so grateful to the Lunar New Year parent committee—including Cindy Nakasuji, Gina Yang, Martha Tian, Elizabeth Koraca, Anellie Manolas-Divecha, Grace Flowers, and Liz Gibson—for organizing such an incredible lunch experience. We loved sharing this meal together.

Today, we have a few brief pieces of business to share with you and some fun updates:

    FAMILY SURVEY - PART 2:
We are getting extremely close to finalizing both our short- and long-term facilities plans. To do so, we need a better understanding of your current locations and, for those relocating within Los Angeles, your anticipated future locations (as far as you know at the moment).

  • January 24, 2025

    Dear Parents,

It has been absolutely heartwarming to see so many of our children back in person over the past week. Their smiles, along with those of our faculty and staff, have truly reminded us that the Seven Arrows magic is alive and well.

This evening, we are thrilled to share some exciting updates and opportunities for the coming weeks. Not only are we taking steps to better support our distance learners, but we’re also introducing some fun and enriching after school opportunities for our students.

We’re also happy to share that, by next week, all of our teachers will have returned, including those who have faced challenges alongside our families. Most of our faculty are already back and fully engaged, and we are so grateful for their commitment to supporting our students during this time.

Moving forward, we kindly ask families to make every effort to drop off their child(ren) on time each morning. We understand that some of you are traveling from far away, and we deeply appreciate your dedication. As we transition more fully back into academics, arriving on time ensures that your child starts their day with ease and allows teachers to maximize learning time for everyone.

Please know that we are continuing to work diligently to secure our new location. We will update you as soon as we have confirmation, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during this process.

COMMUNITY HEALING - POSTPONED DUE TO RAIN

Fortunately for the firefight, we are expecting rain this weekend in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, it means we will be postponing the Community Healing event originally scheduled for a later date to be determined, but likely next weekend.

We will reach out once we have a new date confirmed. We look forward to taking this intentional time to come together and devote space to the healing process.

    Dear Families,

We have been so deeply moved by the outpouring of support for our community during this unimaginable event. The question we have been hearing again and again is: “How can I help?” This question reflects the heart of our community and our city—a shared spirit of care, resilience, and action. Even as Los Angeles faces profound challenges, these moments remind us of the strength of our collective humanity.

Today, we are introducing The Phoenix Fund, a dedicated effort to support the Seven Arrows community as we rebuild and create a brighter, stronger future. This fund represents more than just recovery—it’s about renewal, resilience, and ensuring our school remains a place of inspiration, connection, and growth for generations to come.

    HOW YOU CAN HELP

    • Share the Fund Materials with Potential Supporters

For those who have the ability to make a significant impact through a large donation or know of individuals or companies interested in supporting our cause, we have created a comprehensive letter and presentation about The Phoenix Fund. These materials can be accessed through the links below, and we encourage you to share them with anyone who may be interested in contributing to our efforts.

Additionally, we are happy to arrange one-on-one discussions with potential donors who would like more information or seek a more personal connection to our school and the vital work we are undertaking.

  • January 20, 2025

    Dear Parents,

As we continue to navigate these challenging times and hold school at the temporary location of the Boys and Girls Club, we acknowledge the ongoing difficulties many families are facing, including those still displaced from their homes. Please know that we are here to support you and your children as best as we can.

This week, school remains in session. At this point, we have stabilized operations enough to move forward with our curriculum and pacing plan. Today is a pupil-free day in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. On Tuesday, we will transition to more normal academics and homework routines. Homework and due dates will be published on the class websites, the Google Classroom pages (for 4th–6th grades), and communicated directly to students.

Learning happens best in person, and although we understand that many families (including some of our own staff) have had to relocate in recent weeks, we strongly encourage those who are able to attend school at the Boys and Girls Club to do so. Please use this brief form to let us know if your child will attend in person so we can plan accordingly.

To address concerns about air quality, we want to reassure you that all children will remain indoors, and each room is equipped with an IQAir purifier to maintain a safe and healthy environment.

In addition, we know these times are not only physically but emotionally challenging. Please note that Darren will be available for any students seeking social-emotional support. We will also have additional counselors available to support both students and parents. These individuals will be on-site beginning this week. There are also additional resources detailed on our Seven Arrows Strong website.

Here is the schedule for this week:

    • In-person students:

      • TK–2nd Grade: Full school day with academics, specialty classes, PE, snack, and lunch.

      • 3rd–6th Grade: Zoom instruction in the morning alongside distance learners, supported by in-person teachers. Afternoons will include specialty classes, PE, snack, lunch, and one-on-one or small group time with homeroom teachers for additional instruction and conferencing.

    • Distance learners:

      • TK–2nd Grade: Morning Zoom meeting followed by asynchronous work.

      • 3rd–6th Grade: Morning Zoom instruction followed by asynchronous work.

Although this depends on the number of in-person students, this week is likely to be the last week that homeroom teachers will provide Zoom instruction directly. Starting the following week, homeroom teachers will focus on in-person teaching, and distance learners will be assigned a separate teacher who will report to the homeroom teacher. Distance attendance will remain essential for successful learning, as asynchronous work alone will not be sufficient to keep pace with in-person peers. Please check class websites regularly to support your child in staying on track.

Looking ahead, given the situation, we plan to continue in person learning during ski week. For those of you who have already made plans that are difficult to cancel, please note that we will support your child upon their return.

We are in a fluid and evolving situation. Homeroom teachers will communicate any small adjustments directly to you. Once our new building is confirmed and ready, we will provide updates as soon as possible.

Thank you for your flexibility, patience, and support as we work together to provide the best possible experience for our students during these times.

    Sincerely,
    Sara and Margarita

Due to the overwhelming trauma, displacement, and loss we’re all experiencing in numerous ways, we are in need of a very special medicine: the medicine of community.

This Sunday, January 26th, from 11:00 until 1:00 PM, we hope you will join your Seven Arrows families and faculty in a healing process facilitated by psychotherapist and mindfulness teacher, Brian Shiers.

We will hear words of comfort, compassion, and wisdom, and we’ll ground ourselves in mindfulness practice. We’ll listen to one another’s stories, make room for every emotion and feeling, and break bread together.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR DAYWORKERS OF SEVEN ARROWS FAMILIES:
If you have been displaced by the fires and have people who worked for you whose jobs have been impacted (gardeners, housekeepers, pool maintenance providers, etc.) who have lost part or all of their income, the charitable foundation, The Change Reaction, would like to provide financial assistance. Please complete this short survey to begin the application for reimbursement of up to $5,000 for these individuals and their families.

    DAYWORKER RELIEF SURVEY

  • Dear Seven Arrows Community,

It was absolutely heartwarming to see so many happy faces today both on Zoom and at the Boys & Girls Club. Here is the lates news:

    IN-PERSON LEARNING:
We are thrilled to report that we can now have ALL students come to the Boys & Girl club from 8:15 AM - 2:30 PM, including Grades 3-6.

Grades 3-6 will have a space there to do their Zoom classes in the morning and will have time in the afternoon for supervised free play and specialty classes. The only change to Zoom schedules for Grades 3-6, is that homeroom time will now begin at 8:30 AM to accommodate for drop off.

To come in person, you do not need to complete the RSVP form again, you can simply show up. If your child is coming for the whole day, please bring lunch, a snack, and a water bottle. Third-Sixth Graders need to bring their device (Laptop or iPad), headphones and a charger (if possible). We will have some extras onsite if needed.

Please note we will be at the Boys & Girls club at 1238 Lincoln Blvd. They have TWO locations on Lincoln, so make sure you go to the correct location.

    CONTACTING US:
Our regular phone number is now working again! So if you want to get in touch during the day, you can now call us at 310-230-0257. The email address dismissal@sevenarrows.org is also being monitored in case you need to share any changes with us.

    Dear Seven Arrows Community,
Hope everyone is hanging in there. While our messages may be shorter and to the point, we hope you still feel the love behind them. Our entire staff is working tirelessly to support your family.

We will continue to update this website throughout the coming days and as needed.

    IN-PERSON OPPORTUNITIES BEGIN TOMORROW:
Please note that although in-person opportunities are beginning, the zoom schedule will still be available. If you would like to come in person, but have not yet RSVPed, please do so here:

      • 3rd-6th grades will still Zoom in the morning for their HR/Specialty classes. The time offered at the Boys and Girls Club will be free play in the gym and fun activities- giving students the opportunity to connect with classmates, teachers, and staff in person, move their bodies, and have fun.

      • TK- 2nd grades: Water bottle, Snack, and Lunch

      • 3rd-6th grades: Water Bottle

We would like to reiterate that this is completely optional and students who can’t attend WILL NOT BE FALLING BEHIND. Teachers will not be moving forward with curriculum; they will be putting together fun and engaging activities for the students. This is about connection, familiarity, structure, and routine for our students and families.

We'd also like to acknowledge that this offering may not be ideal for all families, especially in the upper grades. We are trying our best taking this step by step and working hard to figure out solutions that will allow for more students to be in person for the full day.
